Our client's very unusual violin (viola de Gamba) with case is attributed to Bartolamio Obice, aka  Bartolomeo Obici, of Verona, Italy.

It features a fingerboard of tortoise shell and bone pins and bone tailpiece and end pin.  With replaced bridge and extra bridge, also much newer.  And with period bow.  The case carries an engraved brass plate that likely was added in the 20th century that reads in French and Latin:  Violin De Gamba Bartolamio Obice Fecit Verona 1725 (Violin by Bartholomew Obice Made in Verona 1725)

Paper label affixed to the interior includes a year and the maker's name.

Additional images forwarded upon request.

A few works with similar tortoise shell fingerboards like ours, are on display in the San Giacomo di Rialto church in Venice.  Part of the Museo della Musica, this museum features on their website a violin by Bartolomeo Obici dated 1611.
