Antique Victorian 18K Gold Byzantine Celtic Cross Pendant
$11,000.00
Our client's magnificent Victorian period cross pendant in 18 ct gold in the Byzantine or Celtic style with round amethyst cabouchon stone in center measures 9.0 by 5.20 by 1.3 cm (3.5 by 2 by 0.5 in) and weighs 51 grams (1.83 oz, 1.67 troy oz). Total length including ring is 10.5 cm (4 1/8 in).
Its design and level of craftsman ship is comparable to the work of the celebrated London based goldsmith, John Brogden (1819-1884). Note the exceptional detail and Christogram of Jesus Christ in Greek, comprised of the superimposed first three letters name ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (IHSOUS), I (iota), H (Eta) and Σ (Sigma) which often looks like a Latin 'S' as in this case.
It carries English hallmarks, including "18" in cartouche and crown in eight-sided cartouches on side of the top of the cross. On
reverse are the maker's mark, WBP (or possibly WBR), left-facing queen, leopard for London, capital letter K mark (apparently for 1853), crown and "18" mark again for gold purity.
Condition is good. There are numerous scratches and tiny nicks, consistent with age and good care.
