Our client’s extraordinary gold-mounted lapis lazuli cup in the Mannerist style is of Continental origin and dates from the second half of the 19th century. Apparently unsigned. This undulated oval lapis cup has an everted rim, and the bowl is finely carved with a calyx of leaves. The oval foot has a beaded knop; the triangular base with Vitruvian scroll border set with lapis roundels and chased with waves, supporting three dolphin-form brackets, one rising to support an entwined-dolphin handle enclosing a lapis ball. The spout of the cup is cast and chased as a monster issuing from acanthus. Height: 7 1⁄4 in, 18.4 cm. Possibly from Henrik Wigstrom (1862-1923), St. Petersburg, Russia, designer for Carl Faberge (1846-1920).
