Signed in ink, recto on the print; titled and date inscribed on the verso in pencil in what is believed to be the photographer's hand. Aaron Siskind (1903-1991) was an American abstract expressionist photographer whose work focuses on the details of nature and architecture. While known for his later abstract works, early in his career Siskind was a member of the New York Photo League. Working with their documentary group, Siskind produced several significant socially conscious series of images in the 30's. Among them the "Harlem Document" (from which this photograph comes) remains the most famous. Harry Callahan persuaded Siskind to join him as part of the faculty of the Institute of Design in Chicago (founded by Lazlo Moholy-Nagy as The New Bauhaus ). In 1971 he followed Callahan (who had left in 1961) to teach for the rest of his life at the Rhode Island School of Design. WSFP
