Asian Console Table (Antique Chinese Painting or Calligraphy Table). This antique Ming-style calligraphy or painting table approaches a classical Chinese minimalist design form. The table is in excellent condition and would make an beautiful statement in any room or office.
Its simple, straight apron and carved spandrels of inverted ruyi (cloud) pattern are outlined with carved beading detail. The spandrels and the round stretchers have light pillowing carvings. In Chinese design appreciation, round legs and stretchers were very desirable.
The round, splayed recessed legs, the apron and spandrels all retain most of the original lacquer. The top, having lost most of its original lacquer, glows in a medium brown hue with the richness of a hand rubbed Tung oil finish.
