One of the series of 24 scenes from plays by Shakespeare designed by John Moyr Smith for Mintons China Works, pattern No. 1408. Depicted here is: "The Merchant of Venice, Act IV, scene i". The tile is underglaze block-printed in black on a buff clay body and finished in a clear glossy glaze and signed "J.M.S." in the tile. It is in excellent condition with light wear as shown.
