Marie Antoinette Portrait Calligraphic Lineograph Ink Drawing by Pierre Jean Paul Berny de Nogent (1776)
$11,500.00
Our client's extraordinary calligraphic drawing in ink on laid paper is a very rare and fine example of lineography by Pierre Jean Paul Berny de Nogent (1722-1779), depicting a young Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) at the age of 21, and presented to Charles of Lorraine in 1776.
Berney de Nogent was an accomplished soldier, published writer and skilled calligraphic illustrator who studied lineography with Louis Rossignol (1694-1739). Rossignol's works are the basis of L'Art d'ecrire (The Art of Writing), published shortly after his death in 1741. An increasingly popular art form of the 18th century, lineography is the art of drawing without lifting the pen, pencil, or brush.
Good condition. Surface with craquelure, scuffs, scratches, fold marks and wrinkles. Frame with nicks, small losses, scuffs, scratches, small cracks, consistent with age.
The Lorraine-born Prince Charles Alexander Emanuel (1712-1780), was an Austrian general and field marshall of the imperial army, and Governor-General of the Austrian Netherlands.
The drawing resides under modern matte and mounted in later glazed, carved wooden frame.
