Our client's very rare and magnificent nineteenth century giltwood lithophane in the Chinese style features a carved jade panel depicting mother and child and an elegant giltwood frame, with candle socket with carved glass shade in rear and on/off switch in rear at the base. Attributed to Edward I. Farmer (1872-1942), New York.
Farmer was an avid collector and dealer of Chinese jades and other antiques and operated galleries in New York City for 29 years until has passing in 1942. Born in Germany and educated in England, Farmer traveled extensively throughout the Far East as a young man, inheriting his interests from his father who was a trader of goods from China, Japan and Australia. Artworks from his collection, including jade, porcelain, giltwood and silver objects, can be found in prestigious collections around the world.
There are scuffs, scratches, nicks, rubbing wear and small losses, and visible cracks to the giltwood and repaired cracks to the jade at the base. In need of new wiring.
