Vintage Guardian Service Ware Aluminum CookwareCanning Cooker, Dutch Oven or Stock Pot. Guardian Service cookware is constructed out of hammered aluminum, and is considered to be heavy-duty in contrast to today's cookware. It was made by Century Metalcraft Corporation of Los Angeles from 1935 to until 1956 at which time the plant burned down. It was considered to be quite pricey for the day and a complete starter set cost about a month's salary. It was sold via home shows, Independent salesman sold Guardian Service cookware at in home parties. At these dinner parties, the Guardian Service salesman would prepare a delicious meal for the guests, all in hopes of selling them some of the cookware. and if you were lucky enough to own a set you were the envy of all your friends!
Guardain utilized the high domed glass lids which are designed so that the food's moisture would condense while cooking, and then drip back down on the food. Plus, the patented bases insured uniform heating of the food. During the pre-WWII years, this cookware had metal lids, but because of the rationing during the War, the lids were then made from oven-proof glass. It was one of the first versions of waterless cookware, There are a variety of sizes of cookware pots and pans, ranging from 1 quart to 4 quarts. Roasters, griddles, kettle ovens, beverage urns, and double boilers were also part of the collection.This set was made to can with and comes with the original handled wire rack and a wire four part rack for the canning jar. It is great to can all your food items, but also used for stews, soups, roast and more, all cooked on the stove top! You can even bake bread, cakes and more also on top of the stove or grill. This self contained kettle oven is very sturdy, versatile, self basting and require little or no water to cook.
It is 8" deep not including the lid, by 12" across, the glass lid is original to this set as well. It is in excellent condition, lid is also in excellent condition but does have one chip on the inside edge that does not affect use. The racks are also in very nice condition, do show some signs of age, probably could be polished to shine with fine steel wool if desired, fine to use as they are. Overall this is a very clean set, does show slight signs of use as is expected in pieces of this age. It would be a wonderful addition to your collection or cookware set!
