Our client's exceptional, large oil painting of an American Indian with dagger and scalp in hand was painted by the distinguished American artist, George Frederick Bensell (1837-1879). Signed and dates 1873 in lower left corner. Stretcher approximately 30 by 50 inches and wooden frame 39 by 59 inches.
Canvas cleaned and relined with some small losses.
Bensell studied with James Reid Lambdin (1807-1889) at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and exhibited there annually from 1856 through 1868. An artist with diverse interests and inspirations, he is known for penning The Artist's Dream, and twenty-two page poem in the collection of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.He was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club. His artwork can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Museum of American Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and Germantown Historical Society.
Though he lived only 42 years, he enjoyed a successful career as a portraitist and painter of landscapes, historical and genre scenes including works in the Orientalist style and works depictings the American west including Native Americans and Yosemite among other subjects. He also worked as a commercial illustrator.
