Grand Tour Siena Marble Inkwell After the Tomb of Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus
Our Grand Tour, nineteenth century hand-carved inkwell crafted from Italian Siena marble and variegated grey/charcoal marble plinth is fashioned after the tomb of Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus. 9 1/4 by 3 1/2 by 5 inches. In good condition, with chip losses at the edges and cracks and small losses to the marble.
Scipio (c337 BC – 270 BC) was one of the two Roman consuls elected in 298 BC. He led the Roman army to victory against the Etruscans near Volterra. A member of the Roman noble family of Scipiones, he was the father of Lucius Cornelius Scipio and Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Asina, and great-grandfather of Scipio Africanus.
The Sarcophagus of Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus was discovered in the Tomb of the Scipios and resides in the Vatican.
