Huge 96 cm Antique 17th - 18th century Indian Wooden Sculpture Hindu Deity Garuda

$8,000.00
Quantity available: 1

Antique museum quality 17th - 18th century, South Indian, finely hand carved and polychrome wooden sculpture of the Hindu deity Garuda.
He stands in a Tribhanga pose on an octagonal lotus base over a rectangular plinth, wearing a long dhoti tied at the waist with a sash falling down the sides of his legs. His upper torso is adorned with necklaces, his arms with armlets and bracelets, his face has a large nose and a full handlebar mustache, and he wears a high conical headdress.

CONDITION: It shows age and use, with a dark patina. The statue has lost most of its original polychrome, age cracks, and splits in the wood.
The rectangular plinth appears to be a later replacement. The arms are secured to the shoulder by two hand forged iron brackets, one at the front and one at the back.
Judging by the deep corrosion in the iron, this was most likely done over 200 years ago (a bracket on the back of the right arm is missing), a wrought iron bracket reinforces the right forearm, the flowing sash straps are reinforced with 20th century iron plates and screws.
Some fingers chipped. Octagonal lotus base reinforced with a new wooden board.
