Our client's Meiji period charger by Kumagaya of Kyoto depicts a seated monk or Rakan figure and a phoenix bird

(ho-ho, alternatively ho-o or hōō) in flight.  10 5/8 inches (27 cm) in diameter and 1 inch (2.5 cm) tall. Stand is not included.

Signature on reverse reads from right-to-left and top-to-bottom 京都 (Kyoto) 熊谷  造 (Kumagaya craftsman made)

Rakans are ascetics who guard and proclaim Buddhist law on earth in the period after the death of Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, and the coming of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future.
