Our client's extraordinary oil on canvas by Jean Gabriel Domergue (1889-1962) depicts the popular French actress of stage and screen, Andree Spinelly (1887-1966). Signed and dated 1922, this enormous portrait, mounted in a beautiful hand-made custom silver gilt frame by Lowy measuring approximately 6 by 8 feet, depicts the actor seated on a chaise, discreetly covered by a luxurious throw with white cockatoo birds perched above her. This painting was featured on the cover of May-June 1922 edition of l'Illustration which focused on the Paris Salon and other exhibitions.

Born Elise Fournier, the actress adopted the name Andree Spinelly. She was one of the leading French female actors of the Art Deco period, a true icon of the roaring twenties, famous for her work on the vaudeville stage in Paris and elsewhere, plus a number of major motion pictures including known for Moscow Nights (1934), American Love (1931) and La châtelaine du Liban (1934).
