Our client's bronze bust with polychrome patina depicting Bellone by Jean-Leaon Gerome (1824-1904) measures 32 1/4 inches tall and is in good condition. On the left side inscribed J L GEROME and on the reverse at the base, E Muller. Bellone debuted at the Paris Salon in 1893, originally composed in silvered bronze, ivory and Lalique glass. A patinated plaster version with glass is in the collection of the Musee Georges-Garret, Vesoul. An example as offered by Sotheby's in London on May 25, 2016 in lot 71 and closed at 25,000 GBP ($33,875 based on the exchange rate on day of sale).
According to Christie's, the debut of Bellone at the 1893 Salon marked a stunning and critically-acclaimed collaboration between the artist, his foundry and other craftsmen in various other media. Originally completed in silvered bronze, ivory and Lalique glass, Gerome's avant-garde work was a sculptural phenomenon and divided critics of the Salon, which depicting a jarring and representation of the Roman deity in all its polychrome glory. A patinated plaster and glass version of the model in bust-form is housed in the Musée Georges-Garret, Vesoul.
