Our watercolor by John Alonzo Williams (1869-1951) depicting a domestic interior scene resides in a period glazed giltwood frame measuring 24.5 by 28.25 inches.  Portion of the painting exposed measures approximately 15.25 by 19.25 inches.

 From the collection of Jay Waldmann of Waldmann Inc., the widely respected antique dealer in Southampton, NY.

The artist was born in Wisconsin and studied at the Art Students League and the Metropolitan School of Art in New York City, where he became a member of the National Academy of Design.  He was a prolific illustrator and award-winning watercolorist.  Williams won the George A. Zabriskie prize at the 1927 show of the American Water Color Society; the Shaw prize of the Salmagundi Club in 1934 and 1936; and the William Church Osborn prize of the American Water Color Society in 1946. He was an honorary life member of the Salmagundi Club, the Artists Guild, and the Society of American Illustrators.  His works can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution.
