The artist is considered among the first great Danish commercial designers of the industrial age.
Trained as an architect, Engelhardt is admired for his designs across a wide variety of mediums, including font design, ceramics, street signs, and the design of tram cars for Copenhagen Tramways (Københavns Sporvogne).
In 1927 he was awarded the Eckersberg Medal, issued annually to a single artist by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied in 1910-1911. It is named after Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, known as the father of Danish painting.
