A large antique German Westerwald salt-glazed stoneware pewter-lidded jug is a magnificent piece primarily used for beer or wine. It showcases a striking cobalt blue decoration on a grey stoneware body, which creates a visually appealing contrast. The intricate design and craftsmanship are evident in the detailed cobalt blue patterns adorning the jug.

Its baluster body, flared neck, and everted foot create an elegant and balanced shape. The jug is adorned with intricate patterns, meticulously molded in low relief, and hand-chiseled. These patterns include scrolled foliage, gadroons, and bands of acanthus, showcasing craftsmanship and attention to detail.

The elongated neck with pinched spout is applied on the center with Mascaron, the strap handle joining the body to the neck, and mounted with a fluted domed hinged pewter lid surmounted by an elaborate thumb-piece finial.

Blue-glazed Westerwald jugs were produced from the early 17th century until the late 19th century. 19th-century jugs were often crafted in elaborate shapes bodies, intended for display purposes rather than practical use, and they bear stamps or markings on their bases, indicating the maker's mark, numbers, or other identifying information.

This particular jug is unmarked, lacking any identifiable stamps or markings. However, it is interesting to observe that several other Westerwald pitchers with similar features, decorations, colors, and base finishes, also unmarked, can be found in the collections of various museums. Remarkably, these similar jugs are dated to the 17th century.

The absence of markings on this jug adds to its intrigue and raises questions about its age. While it may not have the 19th-century stampings commonly seen, its resemblance to 17th-century examples suggests a possible connection to that period. The presence of similar unmarked jugs in museum collections further supports this notion.

This jug is a rare find, characterized by its exceptional size and pattern. Due to its unique nature, it is the first of its kind we have encountered in the entire history of our business. While we cannot provide an exact date of manufacture for this particular jug, we can confidently state that it is an antique piece over 100 years old. Considering its distinct features and similarities to 17th-century Westerwald stoneware, it may have been crafted during that era.
