A. Lietz Co. San Francisco   Signal Corps  U.S. Army Compass in Leather Case.    My best guess is that this is a surveyors instrument.    The leather case may or may or may not be original to this instrument.     The leather case show wear and the snap is broken.  The compass is in very good working  condition.  Any streaks showing on the glass is merely due to the reflection off the sun as I as taking pictures outside.
