Louis XVI Style Commode after Benneman and Stöckel for Marie-Antoinette Château de Fontainebleau
$15,000.00
Our client's vintage, Spanish-made ebonized commode a vantaux in the French Louis XVI style dating from the early to mid 20th century is modeled after the 18th century design by Joseph Stockel, modified and executed by Guillaume Benneman (c1750-1811) for Marie Antoinette's Sale des Jeux (game room) at the royal chateau at Fontainebleau in the late 1780s. It measures 71 by 36.75 by 26.5 inches. The ebonized finish may not be original, but over the past two centuries has been a favored treatment of this Louis XVI style. Drawers are finely crafted from mahogany, a luxurious choice by the cabinet maker, not usually seen in antique and vintage reproductions of this revered model.
With variegated white and grey marble top with rounded outset corners, frieze drawer in center and two doors with interior fitted with six drawers, and extensive gilt bronze mounts including three roundels depicting Bacchanal themes including Diana with Cupid, Bacchantes, Satyress, Cupid and child Satyrs. With three original keys and working locks. Small center drawer with the stamped mark of the importer and MADE IN SPAIN stamp.
In good condition, with oxidation and rubbing wear to the gilt surfaces, a handful of restorations to the metal surfaces as seen in our closeups, scuffs, scratches, and nicks. Marble top is clean and in excellent condition with no deep scratches. Ebonized finish is apparently not original.
