Lyon and Smith Coopers Hand Adze
$145.00
This is a clean 10 inch long coopers' hand adze with three stamps on it. One stamp is the maker's name and location LYON & SMITH, another is CINI OHIO, and the third is THOMAS WALT. I am doing my best to make out the letters in these stamps and I am about 90% sure of the letters in them. I recognize the LYON & SMITH name as they are found in the tool maker's directory in the mid-1800's era, and were located in Cincinatti Ohio at that time. This is a nicely made tool typically the quality of edge tools made from the mid to late 1800's era. It holds an edge well and is sharp now. This tool or similar to it are often identified as coopers' tools but may have been used for other applications too. We didn't sharpen it, and it very sharp, not much wear at all, no rust no damage or cracks noted. The handle is solid, fits tightly. The cutting edge is about 2.9 inches wide. A good tool, just needs a little sharpening. The cutting edge does have a mild convex (curved outward) form parallel to the cutting edge.
