Our lovely porcelain vase from KPM was designed by Trude Petri (1906-1988), one of their most important and influential designers of the mid-century period, having designed for the firm from 1928 to 1967. It measures 11 inches tall and 10 inches in diameter and carries the scepter mark with blue orb over KPM on underside. It features a geometric blue design on white ground and has a highly polished, glass-like surface. In very good condition, with only a few light scratches. Currently with floral styrofoam foam inserted which we will remove.
According to KPM, Petri attended the state schools for free and applied arts in Hamburg and began training as a potter. In 1927 she moved to Berlin and worked under Otto Gothe at the United State School for Free and Applied Arts (today UdK Berlin) in the ceramic specialist class. This was Trude Petri's first contact with the manufactory, because Otto Gothe's ceramics class, in which she studied, was affiliated with the State Porcelain Manufactory Berlin (KPM Berlin).
From 1928 Petri was initially a freelancer at the Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin (KPM Berlin) under the direction of Nicola Moufang . When Günther von Pechmann took over the management of the manufactory in 1929, Petri was employed as a permanent designer. Two years later, Petri designed the URBINO dinner service which won the grand prize in 1937 at the International World Exhibition in Paris. URBINO is considered exemplary for timeless porcelain design and is exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
In cooperation with the sculptor Siegmund Schütz, she developed the ARKADIA service in 1938 for the 175th anniversary of the manufactory.
