Our client's wonderful, monumental Kutani Satsuma vase, 34 1/2 inches tall, features extraordinary enameled and gilt figurative scenes, including Samarai and ceremonial Karakiri, in entersecting cartouches by the celebrated calligrapher, Tamara Kensei (1887- ).  In excellent condition.  With Kutani mark, and two cartouches describing the subject of the vase, namely the Revenge of the 47 Ronin, including one that lists each of the 47 samarai by name.  In what is also known as the Ako vendetta, a band of 47 lordless samarai, aka ronin, avenged the death of their former master on the 31st of January, 1703.  It is one of the three major adauchi vendetta legends in Japan, alongside the Revenge of the Soga Brothers and the Igagoe vendetta.
