Ancient Bronze age circa 1400-1200 B.C. Europe, Palstave axe of typical form made of cast and polished bronze. A massive bronze axe head with a dramatic flared vertical blade, a thick blade neck with a recessed triangular design, two lateral hafting flanges, and a thin stop bar.
The palstave is a particularly wicked-looking ax with flat side flanges that fit squarely into a piece of shaped wood. To function as an ax, Bronze Age makers would have chosen a shaft with a natural 90-degree crook to attach the axe head to the haft.
