An ancient Chinese TANG DYNASTY (618-907 AD) bronze tripod wine-warming vessel, Jiao Dou -Diao-Dau, Jiaodou.
This antique wine vessel features a deep, rounded body that rests on three curved, tapered legs. The rim is adorned with two handles - a curved handle shaped like the mythical head of the Jiezi bird and a cusped flat handle. The center of the vessel has a spout for pouring wine.
CONDITION: In good condition, as seen in this photo, covered with a dark brown-green patina, with areas of earthen encrustation. No cracks, repairs, or restoration.
MEASUREMENTS:
Width including handles: 54 cm (21.26 inches).
Height: 44.5 cm (17.56 inches).
Weight: 5 kg (11 lb.).
PROVENANCE: The vessel came from a private Canadian collection of important Oriental and European antiques.

The bronze wine-warming vessel Jiao Dou Diao - Dau Jiaodou with three legs and a handle, has been recorded and discovered in literature and archaeological data. There are several historical references to the Dou Dou, including the following:
1. The ancient Chinese dictionary "Shuowen Jiezi" records in Volume 1 of Xuanying Yinyi quoted from Yun Ji "鎎, also known as "鎎斗" ("鎎 is a warmer with handle and three legs.”)
2. Documentary records of Ji Dou first appeared in the Han Dynasty, Volume 3 of "Ji Jiu Pian" of Shiyou: "Forged Lead and Tin Stirrups and Ji Dou."
3. An ancient note in" Poems of Seductive Allure"(Yanshi) of the Tang Dynasty: "Ji is called Ji Dou, and it is also a warm vessel. It looks like a Chou but has no destiny."
4. After the Han Dynasty, there were gradually more records about the vessels; Volume 15 of "The Sound and Meaning of All Sutras" by Shi Yuanying of the Tang Dynasty quoted a rhyme collection: 攔, a warm vessel, with three legs and the handles.
