Ancient Roman Wheel-Thrown Pottery ribbed ware Amphora, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century A.D. 

 

A wonderful ceramic amphora with an attractive hourglass shape comprised of a piriform body with averted rim, twin bifurcated strap handles joining neck to shoulder, all on a narrow flat base. 

 

CONDITION: In good condition considering its age to be over 1800 years, in its original unclean condition with age patina, the incrustation and mineral deposits, strongly visible on the surface. Stabilized pressure cracks, otherwise intact. No Restoration. 

 

DIMENSIONS: Height: 11 cm (4.33 inches). Width (handle to handle): 13.5 cm (5.32 inches) 

 

PROVENANCE: Ex-Old Canadian collection.
