An outstanding Indian hand carved wooden sculpture of the four-armed Hindu deity Shiva. India 20th century.
The sculpture is finely hand-carved in high relief with grate details from a single block of wood and hand painted with bright colors.
The figure depicts Shiva sitting on a double lotus throne in a meditation posture, with his right hand held up in the Abhaya mudra, his lower left-hand rests on his inner thigh, in Varada Mudra. His back two hands each hold an ax and antelope.
Hi, is wearing a dhoti tied at his waist, with a sash draping down the side of her right leg. His naked torso with overly rounded breasts is adorned with necklaces, and her arms and legs are adorned with armlets and bracelets.
Her face features a protruding nose flanked by almond-shaped eyes, plump lips, and elongated earlobes adorned with lotus flower-shaped earrings. Her hair is styled in an elaborate chignon adorned with a luxurious golden diadem.
This sculpture can be displayed as a standing figure or mounted on the wool, since is affixed at the back with suspension mounts.
CONDITION: In its original good condition, as had been found.
