Antique 16-17th Century European Gun Powder Horn Flask For Wheel or Matchlock Gun

Antique, European gunpowder flask in a characteristic flattened form from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries for a matchlock or wheel lock gun.

It consists of a curved pressed cow horn body with beveled edges and a wooden buttplate fitted with an oval iron plate secured with a brass domed pin. The brass upper plate is attached to the horn body by four iron pins and equipped with a tapered brass tubular pouring spout with an iron turn-off closure.

This early form of closure system is often found in 16th-century gunpowder flasks, which were later replaced by a spring-loaded pivoting mechanism and nozzle cap.

Musketeers used this form of powder flask throughout Europe from the late 16th century to the early 17th century.

CONDITION: Perfectly preserved original untouched condition, showing age use. Horn, metal mounting, and iron pins with old patina. There are some cracks on the edges of the horn body.
