Antique 16th century European Gun Powder Horn Flask For Matchlock or Wheel Lock Gun

Antique, late 16th century, European gunpowder flask for matchlock or wheel lock gun in characteristic flattened form.

It is composed of a curved pressed cow horn body, fitted with a brass buttplate cut with scalloped edges and engraved at the bottom with floral scrolls. The brass upper mount is also cut with scalloped edges, pierced with hearts, and engraved with a wavy pattern at the top.

The tapered brass tubular pouring spout is engraved with rings and affixed with an iron turn-off closure.

This early form of the closure system is often found in 16th-century gunpowder flasks, later replaced by a spring-loaded pivoting mechanism and nozzle cap.

Musketeers used this form of powder flask throughout Europe from the late 16th century to the early 17th century.
