Antique 17th-century Post-Byzantine double-sided solid silver orthodox cross in the form of the Mount Athos Cross. Both faces are elaborately cast and chiseled in relief with four panels. The obverse central panel depicts the crucified figure of Christ, and the three panels on the terminals of the cross are adorned with a bust of saints.
The opposite side central panel depicts the standing Virgin Mary with Infant Christ. The three panels on the terminals of the cross are adorned with a bust of saints.
The cross is mounted on a domed stepped oval base decorated with petals.
It is unmarked like most of this type of 17th-century silver cross but was acid-tested as 900-grade purity silver.
CONDITION: It is in its original condition, showing its age and usage. It is slightly worn with an old patina.
