Antique 1872 Cross - with HISTORY - Charter Oak Octagon Schoolhouse - Victorian rose GOLD plate - William H. Holcomb - Schuline Illinois

A fabulous piece of history, this antique rose GOLD plate tip Victorian Cross is wood ( possibly rosewood) and it measures 2 1/2" long. The center plaque reads Charter Oak CES 1872. It hangs from a rose gold plated chain that measures 15" long and I believe it is original to it. The history behind this school and cross is amazing. The cross is dated a year before the replacement octagonal school was completed. The first school house was built in 1863. The replacement was built by William M. Holcomb in the architectural style:Octagon Mode. The schoolhouse served as a public primary school until 1954 when it was closed and its students were sent to a newer central school. After years of neglect, it was bought by the Randolph County Historical Society, which restored it and now maintains it. On October 11, 1978, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Holcomb built many things and was honored with the CGW Depot - Holcomb Station (1950) which was founded in 1876 bing named for him . He was also the General Manager of the Chicago and Iowa Railroad at the time. He was also the Superintendent of Transportation for the Chicago World's Fair of 1893. I have added in my photos a paper of the history of the schoolhouse which was so very interesting. To think this cross dates back to the start of this small octagon schoolhouse is just amazing. The possibility of this cross belonging to Daniel Ling, the teacher of the schoolhouse prior to reconstruction makes a lot of sense due to the date.

Because these are vintage estate pieces and are vintage and possibly pre-worn so they are not considered new from the factory…..  Please see photos for any wear or light surface scratches that come with age.?………………. We don’t polish these previously owned well loved pieces so we can keep the original patina. We try and photograph all of the pieces next to a ruler so you can see the actual size. We cannot guarantee the authenticity of a stone in a costume piece of jewelry. All pieces have been worn at least one time unless otherwise specified.  Although the pieces we carry are unique and interesting they may have a little wear ( if any) but they sure have a lot of love that came with them when they were first purchased way back when.
