A fine pair of antique late 18th century pair of Spanish flintlock pistols signed on the barrels “PERESTEVA.”
Each with a two-stage steel barrel, ended with stepped muzzle ring. Faceted, breach, heavily inlaid in silver along the top flat ‘PERESTEVA’ with in a rectangular cartouche with silver inlaid borders adorned with scrolls.
Figured Mahogany full stocks with bag shaped butts, top of the stock carved in relief with a shell behind the barrel tang, and characteristic step behind the lock. Each applied with oval silver escutcheons finely engraved with initials.
Flat bevel edged locks with stepped tails, rainproof beveled pans, large frizzens, and swan necked cocks with a distinctive Spanish ring style top jaw screw..
Steel mounts, including gently shaped trigger guard with front modeled in the form of a vase. turned ramrod-pipes, horn-tipped wood ramrods, one with iron worm.
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length of each pistol: 36.5 cm. (14.37 inches).
CONDITION: The pistol is in its original untouched condition: It shows signs of usage and is in good condition considering its age of 250 years. Slightly pitted with dark patina.
The springs of the locks are in working action. The caching system of the locks need a tune-u, as the hammers doesn't cock properly. One of the hammers stay, cocked only on the halve but suddenly won't hold at full cock and the other won't stay cockaded at all.
The Peresteva family were originally one of the most prominent gunsmiths in Ripoll Catalonia, the main gunsmithing center in Spain during the 17th and 18th centuries and had been conferred by the title of "Armero del Rey" (King`s own gunsmith).
