$300.00
Antique 18th century Islamic Indo-Persian Damascus Steel shield Separ-Dhal of typical shallow domed circular form hand-hammered from a single piece of thick solid and heavy Damascus Crucible steel with visible Damascus pattern.
The center is set with four rounded rosette bosses, elaborately chiseled with floral pattern and affixed on the reverse with ring bolts with original leather straps to hold the shield
The bosses are interrupted by four carved and engraved in low relief cusped cartouches, each cartouche depicting Islamic horsemen hunting various animals.
The shield's border is decorated with a wide band deeply carved and engraved 8 oval cartouches, each containing Qur'anic Benedictor inscriptions in the Arabic calligraphic script "inasta'liq." divided by 8 quatrefoil cartouches with hand chiseled with birds and various animals.
The edge is reinforced with a brass band that is applied and riveted to the shield.
The interior of the shield is lined with its original dark brown fabric.
This shield is much heavier than other steel shields of this type and size because it is made of Damascus Crucible steel. Furthermore, the sword blades made of Damascus Crucible steel are also heavier than blades made of regular steel.
