Antique,18th century Indo Persian Mughal Indian shield Dhal of circular convex form with an inverted rim, made of semi-translucent, very thick, light brown rhinoceros hide, adorned on the center with embossed central medallion surrounded by four cast and hand chiseled bronze bosses in the form of stylized fully bloomed eight -petal flower heads. The rim is decorated with three rings finely hand painted with various designs. The back of the shield is equipped with a leather strap.

This is a museum quality Islamic Mughal shield, which in fact can be found on display in museum. A similar example of the shield is in the collection of the famous Collection of the Islamic Arms and Armour: An Islamic Gallery in King Faisal Foundation Center Riyadh. And is published in the Museum catalog” Weapons of the Islamic World: Swords & Armour “Page:104. No. (112)

Another similar 18th century shield is published in the book “A Glossary of Arms and Armor by George Cameron Stone. Page 208.FIG.5”. Presently In the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City.

MEASUREMENTS: 33.5 cm (12.99 inches) in diameter

CONDITION: The shield is in good condition considering its age, showing age and use. The leather strap exhibiting natural age craquelure, a typical characteristic for old leather.
