Authentic antique 19th-century Indonesian-Javanese wayang topeng mask. It is finely carved from exotic wood, possibly Kelana wood, and has a naturalistic expression, with pierced eyes and nose. The mask's hair is sculpted and adorned with elaborately carved and gilt ornament, while the lacquer finish is applied with a natural hair mustache and Mica teeth. The mask is also pierced on both sides with a small hole for threading a silk suspension string.

NOTE: These traditional masks from Java are known in Indonesia as "Wayang Topeng." Actors wear them as they perform traditional drama dances, known as wayang topeng, wearing elaborate costumes and accompanied by a gamelan orchestra. The Wayang Topeng dances act out stories from the ancient Javanese Panji Narratives, tales of kings and heroes thought to have originated in East Java around the 13th century.

CONDITION: Some eyebrow hairs are missing, and there is chipping and wear due to age. The interior has a dark, glossy patina from usage.
