Antique 19th century African Abyssinian, Ethiopian Empire large Tafa (Gasha) shield of an Amhara warrior. The shield of circular domed conical form made of hand forged steel, covered on the front with velvet fabric with leopard fur pattern and applied with profusely embossed brass bands, and a cylindrical shield boss at its peak. have a plating of what looks to be gold. The interior lined with red color leather decorated with tooled geometrical pattern and affix on the center with wood handle bounded with red leather.

The Amhara peoples used these shields for battle and as prestige items to show rank and importance of the owner's status.

The las photo is depicting the Ethiopian Emperor Menelik (seated centrally) and the courtly warriors with similar shields.

CONDITION: Overall, in good condition, showing a good patina from age and use, some age wear to the fabric, the leather lining has tears.

Amharas are ethnic group traditionally inhabiting parts of the northern and central highlands of Ethiopia that formed the famous Abyssinian Empire going back 3000 years to biblical times of King Solomon and Queen Sheba. The first Amhara Solomonic King was Melinik I and the last was Emperor Haile Selassie that was Murdered in 1974. The Amhara people were the dominant power in Ethiopia because of their Economic wealth and deep culture and heritage. They are Christian and formed second largest Ethnic group in Ethiopia.
