Antique American Civil War Sword Possibly Confederate Import

Antique American Civil War "Staff & Field" officers sword with the owner's name "W. Taylor." engraved on the scabbard locket.
This sword pattern, known as the 1850 US Foot Staff & Field Officers Sword, was designed on the French Model 1845 Infantry Officer's Sword and was adopted by the US Army in 1850 as the standard sword for all staff officers and the field officers, infantry, artillery, and riflemen. Although "frail" swords became optional in 1860, this model remained popular throughout the Civil War and was produced before and during the Civil War by various US manufacturers, but also by German Solingen sword makers for export to the USA.
Many of those sword blades bear maker's marks or US retailers' names, inspection marks, or are engraved with American motifs such as the American eagle, patriotic motto's, etc.
These swords were used during the Civil War by the Union and Confederacy and made during the Civil War; for the North by American swords makers and for the South by small Confederate manufacturers.

This sword is entirely unmarked; it does not have any maker's markings or government inspector's stamps, indicating that it was made before or during the Civil War by one of the manufacturers appointed by the US Government. Also, it lacks the European sword maker's markings or grinding marks that would have been present after the removal of the French inspection marks (poinçons) that were deeply stamped on the ricasso and the manufacturing mark on the spine (all French military swords have such marks). The ricasso and the blade's spine have retained their natural old patina.
All of this indicates that the sword was a Confederate officer's sword, imported from Europe by the Confederates, possibly from France or Germany.

Details: Solid brass semi-basket hilt pierced and chiseled in low relief with foliage, ribbed horn grip is bound with roped twisted copper wire, brass helmet pommel adorned with laurel leaves.
Slightly curved, sturdy single edged steel blade, cut with a broad full-length fuller, and a slender fuller along the back edge.
The sword is accompanied by an original leather scabbard mounted with brass fittings.

CONDITION: Shows age and use. The brass fittings have an old patina, the grip has tight wire wrap and shows some expected wear, the blade is slightly bent (one-third of the length from the tip), the leather scabbard is very dry with age cracks, is broken near the shape and repaired near the suspension band, there are splits on both edges of the scabbard.
