Antique 19th century American Civil War period US officer's sword blade model 1840 by W.H. Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia.
Details: A straight, single-edged, tapered blade cut with a wide, full-length fuller. The outer side is finely engraved with a classical double-handed vase adorned with flowers and leaves with the full logo of renowned sword maker WH Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia. Below is an elaborate cartouche with "US" amongst stars and foliage.
On the opposite side is a finely engraved American eagle with arrows in its talons, the ribbon engraved with the motto "E Pluribus Unum," stars above, flanked by foliate scrolls and oak leaves.
The spine of the blade is engraved with leaves.
The blade tang is stamped on the exterior with FBM and the number 3, and the opposite side is stamped with the numbers 1 and 3.3.
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length: 99.3 cm (36.73 inches).
CONDITION: The lower part of the blade is pitted and corroded and has a rust hole.
