Our antique and very rare hardstone medallions with the appearance of pate-sur-pate porcelain from Cartier depict animated Oriental faces representing Tragedy and Comedy.  Each mounted in brass frames measuring 2 1/8 in, 5.4 cm in diameter.  In their original easel-form retail display case with stamped mark on verso for the Cartier boutique at 9 boulevard des Italiens in Paris which operated from 1874 to 1899.  Designed as exhibition pieces for display in the Cartier boutique, from this pair customers could order similar works fashioned as brooches, pendants or earrings.  Exceptionally rare.
