Antique Colonial Thai Solid Silver Bowl
$500.00
Antique late 19th century colonial Thai silver bowl of bulbous form resting on three domed feet.
The bowl is finely hand repoussé and chiseled with 6 separate figures dressed in traditional Thai attire against an intricately engraved background of scrolling leaves.
Each figure is placed within a shrine with domed roofs formed by tails of the dragons whose heads are turned towards each other, and below are the stylized birds' heads facing each other, dividing these 6 shrines.
The band scrolling leaves adorn the bowl's rim, and the base is encircled by a frieze of lotus petals on the checkered pattern ground.
The bottom of the bowl is engraved with an elaborate Thai Mandala and two rows of script in the Thai/Siam alphabet. The top read "เงิน1" or "Ngoen," which is Thai for approximately 900 grade silver. The bottom script indicates the weight (Baht) of the bowl, which is 288 grams (10.159 ounces).
This kind of Thai silver bowl was traditionally used in Songkran water festivals.
