Antique Medieval Islamic Ceramic Bowl Fatimid Caliphate Egypt or Syria 10th -11 century AD (364 AH– 441 AH)

This is an exceptional antique ceramic bowl from the 10th to 11th century AD (364 – 441 AH) in the Fatimid Caliphate of Egypt or Syria. The bowl has a deep form and rests on a short foot with a disc-shaped bottom. It is an artistic masterpiece with a slip-covered, splash-glazed finish that adds to its beauty.

What makes this piece unique is the rare ornamentation on the interior walls. The intricate design depicts a tiger and a horned bull, a rare composition in Islamic art. The tiger and the bull are depicted in a stylized manner, with intricate detailing that highlights their strength and power.

REFERENCES: Splash-glazed Abbasid pottery is rare and seldom seen for sale or in museums. However, an Egyptian Fatimid earthenware jar with very similar slip-covered glazed and splashes is in the Royal Ontario Museum's collection.
