Antique Pre-Columbian 800-1520 A.D. Costa Rican Stone Nude Male Shaman Sukia Figure
$1,800.00
Antique Pre-Columbian Costa Rican sculpture depicting a nude male shaman, known as "Sukia," from the Atlantic Watershed of Costa Rica, dating back to approximately 800-1520 AD. The figure is carved from gray volcanic basalt and represents a meditating seated male shaman. He is crouched down with his elbows resting on his raised knees, holding a tubular pipe to his mouth, from which he is smoking a hallucinogenic substance during a religious ceremony.
The finely sculpted head showcases remarkable facial features, including coffee bean-shaped eyes, a broad nose, cup-shaped ears, and male genitalia. This piece is a beautiful example of an ancient "medicine man" figure.
The top of his head is carved with a flower head pattern.
These figures were often included in burials and may have also been created for domestic use.
Hallucinogenic drugs, derived from native plants and animals, played a significant role in this culture. Shown deep in a trance, the shaman here is most likely either inhaling or expelling a narcotic. He wears no earthly clothing or jewelry, and there is no visible body modification, as he is both part of this world and the world beyond.
CONDITION: The item is in excellent condition, with no cracks, restorations, or repairs. It shows signs of age and use, and earthly and mineral deposits are present on the surface. Please note that the pictures were taken under studio lighting, so the sculpture appears darker and less glittery in natural daylight.
