Antique Scottish military Regimental (Royal Highlanders) 42nd Foot. The Black Watch Officers Dirk by J. Nowill & Sons Sheffield.

Large sturdy chrome-plated steel blade with notched scalloped spine cut on both sides with a narrow fuller etched on one side with the full logo of the maker: J. NOWILL & SONS SHEFFIELD ,ENGLAND ESTABLISHED A.D.170. A black ebonized composition grip adorned with a traditional braided Celtic pattern and plated metal mounts embellished with Scottish thistles, complemented by a faceted oval jewel.

Accompanied by a leather-covered scabbard adorned with ornate plated metal mounts decorated with St Andrew and Scottish thistles. Complete with original knife and fork with a black composition grip ,with pommels affixed with plated metal mounts embellished with jewels.

The officers of the 42nd Foot, known as The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), historically carried a dirk as part of their dress uniform. The dirk is a traditional Scottish dagger with a single-edged blade, typically worn by officers in the Highland regiments.

The dirk was not just a decorative item but also had practical uses. It was worn on the right side of the officer's waist belt, and its design often included intricate craftsmanship, such as ornamental fittings and engravings. The dirk was a symbol of Scottish heritage and military pride, reflecting the traditional martial culture of the Highland regiments.

In addition to the dirk, officers of the Black Watch would have worn other elements of Highland dress, such as the kilt, sporran, and other accoutrements that distinguished them as part of this renowned regiment. These uniforms and accessories not only served practical purposes but also conveyed a strong sense of identity and tradition among the soldiers and officers of The Black Watch.

CONDITION: Showing its age and usage, the jewel on the pommel of the dirk hilt cracked and chipped. PLEASE SEE THE PHOTOS AS THEY ARE A PART OF THE DESCRIPTION.

Overall length without the scabbard: 41 cm (16.14 inches).
