Antique Socket Chisel/Slick Mortise 1/2 inch Scott
$55.00
This is a clean and sharp .5" wide, mortise socket chisel that is marked by the maker, "SCOTT" but since there was many toolmakers name Scott, I am not sure which one it was. Of the few in the antique toolmaker's listings book, I can only find one that made edge tools, an R. Scott company in Quibec Canada in the town of St. Gabriel, was in business from 1850-1865. It is very heavy duty with a large oversize socket to mount a heavy duty handle. This one is in nice shape, considering the years. This one has plenty of length, 11.25" cutting edge to end of socket, 16" including the handle. We note some pitting on the underside, about 3 1/2" back from the current cutting edge, will not effect the cutting edge for quite a few re-sharpenings under normal use. There is also a rough cast surface down the side of the 1/2 inch width as well, most likely as cast and was not machined smooth. The important area around the cutting edge is very clean as you can see in the pictures. The cutting edge on this chisel holds an edge very well, a pleasure to use! The handle is solid, with a good iron ferrule to keep the handle from splitting, which it has, no cracks, fits the socket very well, very solid hardwood, some minor grain separations noted. This is a good usable chisel most likely from the mid-19th century, most likely used in timber frame/mortise/tenon construction.
