Antique Summer Allegorical Oil Painting with Cherubs or Putti En Grisaille
$5,500.00
This wonderful grisaille oil on canvas in monochrome shades of brown dates from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, and resides in a period frame with raised, three-dimensional swags of bellflowers and ribbons carved in gesso. The work is unsigned, but quality of the putti figures is exceptional. Depicted are three cherubs, one of which is holding a lit torch while another is spilling the contents of a cornucopia, in an allegory of summer, and reminiscent of the allegorical paintings and carvings of the noted Dutch artist, Jacob de Wit and Flemish painter, Piat-Joseph Sauvage. The oval shaped canvas measures 24.75" by 30.5", and the frame measures 41.5" by 42.25" by 1". We have included shots taken both with and without flash to help bring out details in the frame and canvas. Condition of the canvas is good. It has its original nails and has no tears or visible repairs.
