A splendid antique 19th century Tibetan or Nepalese copper shield of circular convex form with an everted rim. The shield is made of superbly hand-hammered, very thick gauge solid copper. The shield's edge is applied with a band decorated in cut openwork.
The shield's surface is adorned with individually crafted brass plaques that are riveted to the copper shield. These plaques consist of four oval convex bosses that are finely repoussed, pierced, and hand-chased with figures seated in the Buddhist lotus position (Padmasana). They are flanked by four domed bosses that are superbly repoussed, pierced, and hand-chased in the form of snow lion masks with eyes inset with natural turquoise stones.
Edged by eight busts of humanoid figures wearing crowns.
The shield has a large domed boss at its center, which is surrounded by four small, embossed rosettes. The boss is in the form of four winged figures and has natural turquoise embedded in the center.
The back of the shield is equipped with a large solid copper handle.
