Our lovely bronze after Pierre Tourgueneff (1853-1912) depicts a medieval period French archer known as a franc-archer or "free archer".  Believed to be the largest size cast of this model, it measure 39 by 23.5 by 9.75 inches.  With beautiful, copper-brown patina and mounted on an oval marble pedestal with nameplate.

Born in Russian, his family emigrated to France to void political and religious persecution.  He as a cousin of the writer Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev.  His father was sentenced to death in absentia by Nicholas I for having participated in the Decembrist revolt.  The family changed its name to Tourgueneff after their move to Frane.

He studied in Paris with the celebrated animalier, Emanuel Fremiet, and began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1880.  He was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honour.
