What a nice old piece that is of a very handsome man ( you can see it better when not photographed) who was probably someone's sweetheart and father. I believe this is American and it is a pinchebeck Gold. The Daguerreotype (In 1839, the Daguerreotype, invented by Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre [1787-1851], became the first photographic process to be announced to the public. Daguerreotypes are unique images which may appear as a positive or negative depending on how light hits the surface). is set under bezel glass setting and is removable ( see photo) . The man wears his hair fashionably side-parted and has a bit of a gotee and an ascot on his neck. The gold scroll frame is in the Rococo Revival style. This type of jewelry was popular in the early days of photography as a decorative and personal way to display pictures of loved ones. The photo has some typical discoloration around the silver image. This also has a hinge on it on the front but I do not believe it was connected to the insert. This measures 1 3/4" x 1 1/2" and has a C clasp with a long protruding pin which helps to date this. You don't find these in jewelry any more, mostly they are in cases. A rare treasure indeed!!! VintageSparkles offers Layaway on all our pieces regardless of which site it comes from. Please remember that vintage & antique items are not mint, nor are they perfect but they sure are full of old history and charm. Please use photos to make your decisions and read our policies prior to buying so you can have an excellent experience with us.
