Stanley Beveled Socket Chisel 5/8 inch No. 440

Unavailable

This is a good sharp beveled socket chisel, marked STANLEY SW MADE IN U.S.A. PAT. APY'D FOR on the socket exterior.  Note the knurled area on the steel at the end of the socket opening.  This model was the only one I know of with that patented feature.  The socket construction was patented after this chisel was made, the patent was 9/7/1926 and these No. 440 chisels were only made for 9 years after the patent date. It measures 10.2" long overall x 5/8" wide cutting edge.. We see very little evidence of use, no wear, a few darkened stains on the steel, but for the most part like new.  The handle is solid hickory and has a good leather end wrap.  A good sharp, useable chisel with lots of life left in it!  Sharpened and ready to use!  This rare model was made in several sizes, 5/8" being one of the more rare sizes.
