Mid-Century Modern Thaden-Jordan Birch Dinette Set
This Mid-Century Modern Thaden-Jordan Birch Dinette Set, circa 1947, encompasses the streamlined appearance and sleek, uncluttered, clean lines that Mid Century designers wished to emulate. This simplicity of the line design is what makes mid-century modern furnishings relevant in today’s homes, whether in a traditional or modern setting.

Constructed out of laminated birch, this fabulous dinette set features four Model 102 chairs, a table with one leaf, and a server with a graduated two-tiered hutch.

The unique chairs have a rectangular cutout design centering the backs and steamed bentwood seating that seems to morph effortlessly into the straight-lined legs. The bent plywood chair is held together with metal fasteners, which in its day was a radical idea for a seat. The corners of the table model the steamed-bentwood design and rest on steam-bent tapered straight-lined legs. The server compliments the chair’s cutout pattern on its two graduated tiers as well as the front face. The top tier has grooves for displaying plates and the bottom tier has a wooden support for showcasing one’s favorite tchotchkes. There is plenty of storage space below the tiers; two cupboards and a center tri-level felt-lined silverware drawer, all with the original wooden straight-lined handles. The front sides of the server complete the steamed bentwood design and are supported by tapered straight-lined legs that add just the right finishing touch to this classic design. The Mid-Century Modern Thaden-Jordan Birch Dinette Set has the Thaden-Jordan label stamped on all of the chairs. All of the pieces are in the original finish with appropriate wear for their age and measure:

This distinctive dinette set hails from the Thaden-Jordan Furniture Corporation (1946-1952) in Roanoke Virginia. Herbert von Thaden and Donald Lewis Jordan had first joined forces during World War II to produce aircraft parts. Jordan's company manufactured plywood parts for the military, so it was an obvious fit to partner with Thaden's wood and plastic laminate company. Herbert von Thaden, pilot, aeronautic engineer and inventor, was the sole designer and creator for Thaden-Jordan. Originally the company manufactured wood, plastic, and metal furniture, and eventually focused on plywood pieces.
